RRHS Chess Club One Move Ahead of Competition

The Rocky River High School Chess Club has quietly advanced through a series of tournaments, placing at all.

The club participated in four Greater Cleveland Scholastic Chess League (GCSCL) tournaments this year. Last fall the club took third place at the Solon Middle School tournament and second at the Beachwood High School tournament, where Dante Centuori went 4-0 to capture a first place individual award.

This winter, the team placed second at the Shaker Heights High School tournament and first at the RRHS tournament. With that win the team finished second place for the season and member Liam Smith placed fifth individually.

Last fall the senior team won the state championship and the title of Best Senior Chess Team in the state at the Ohio Grade Level State Championships in Newark. On April 26, the team will participate in the National High School Championships in Columbus, and in May at the Ohio High School/Middle School State Championships in Pickerington.

The team is advised by Russell Shuster.
