RRHS Robotics Club Makes Mark on Competition

Rocky River High School’s First Robotics Club came home with a plaque and a trophy at its inaugural competition, making its mark on the FIRST Robotics scene.

The team competed in the Buckeye Regional FIRST Robotics Competition at Cleveland State University over spring break, earning the Highest Rookie Seed Award. The Rocky River team was the only rookie team to make it as a backup playoff team, placing 25th out of 55 teams.

Team members who competed are seniors Austin Wilson, William Thesken, Grayson Newton, Jillian Erml and Megan Fox; juniors Austin Schweikert and Annie O’Toole; sophomores Eric Peters, Mohammad Abubakr, Seth Cochran and Josehua O’Halla; and freshmen Kylie Fiala and Hudson Konopka.

More than 1,500 students from Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia competed in the contest where they designed, built and programmed robots.

RRHS launched its club this fall, offering students another activity option that touches marketing, social media, budgeting and, of course, robotics. RRHS math teacher Nathan Woos, club adviser, said he started the club to offer an activity that builds a sense of belonging and community. The club is a member of First Robotics, an international program.
