MATHCOUNTS Contest

Two Rocky River Middle school students earned recognition scores in the state MATHCOUNTS competition.

Ten Honors Geometry students participated in the chapter competition in February at Cleveland State University. The eighth-grade team of Gavin Shi, Laith Wattar, Jacob Hammarlund and Grace Wang placed fourth. Eighth grader Joey Weixel and Gavin tied for sixth place at the Chapter Competition, allowing them to advance to the state competition. Out of 200 students competing at states, Joey ranked 119 and Gavin ranked 128.

Other student participants at the chapter competition were eighth graders Hannah Burges and Erik Kocinare, and seventh graders Henry Kozlowski, Sarah Kozlowski and Seth Purohit.

MATHCOUNTS provides engaging math programs to middle school students of all ability levels to build confidence and improve attitudes toward math and problem solving. The MATHCOUNTS competition series is a national program that provides students with the opportunity to compete against and alongside their peers at four levels – school, chapter, state and national competition.
