LaGRANGE, Ohio (Sept. 30, 2024) -- Rocky River registered a hard-fought battle but came up just short in a bid to advance in Buckeye State postseason play. The Pirates took sixth-place in Monday's DI Grey Hawk Sectional Qualifying Tournament at Grey Hawk Golf Club. [

Needing a top-4 placement to advance to the district tournament stage, the Swinging Corsairs certainly came close. The challenging par-72 track in LaGrange served to tightly bunch the top of a 15-team, 73-player field on an overcast last day of September. River posted a four-man score of 321, which was just two strokes off a fourth-and-final qualifying tally of 319 registered by St. Edward. The top-4 teams were Amherst Steele (307), Westlake (312), Avon Lake (317), and the Eagles.
River's own dispersal was impressive. Junior Angelo Fiutem fired a solid 43-41--84, and his score didn't land as a counter. The Pirates carded four scores between 75-83, with sophomore Nolan Toole's 36-39--75 leading the way. Caden Lawrence posted a 42-39--81. Finn Potts carded a 38-44--82. Senior Max Lehmann was River's fourth: he fired a 43-40--83.
Toole's 75 was best score posted among players unattached to qualifying teams. As a top-4 finisher, he now advances to the DI Northeast District Qualifying Tournament to be held Oct. 7 at Pine Hills Golf Club in Hinckley.
