Undone 3-1: Pirates fall in hard-fought 190-point seesaw battle vs. Eagles

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio (Oct. 12, 2024) -- Rocky River closed out its 2024 regular season with a 3-1 loss to North Olmsted in a wild, 190-point Cleveland West Conference match Saturday. Every game teetered on the edge, but the Eagles prevailed 25-23, 25-22, 22-25, 25-23.

The two sides combined for 27 aces. The overall exchange of errors was near-even, but North Olmsted (11-11, 6-8 CWC) out-hit the Pirates .114 to .061. The win leveled the season series between RRHS and NOHS 1-1; River defeated the Eagles 3-1 in North Olmsted Sept. 17. That match had two 20-20 games (both won by River: 25-20, 26-24).

Rocky River (11-7, 10-4) got 13 kills from Sophia Goldberg and 9K and three total blocks from Ella Brokaw. Kylie Spies logged 23 assists, and Lilly Cupp filed 16 digs. Spies and Cupp each banged out four aces in what marked the Pirates' fourth straight loss.

The visiting Eagles got 13K, 14D, and three aces from Alyssa Byers.

The Maroon & White were party undone by 27 attack errors. Those 6.8 miscues per set mark the team's third-highest rate of the season.

The Raiders' 2024 home record fell to 5-5.

River will now head into prep for the postseason. The Pirates are the No. 13 seed in DIII Region 9. They will open Northeast 3 District Tournament action with a Thursday contest at No. 9 Copley.
