Bat freeze: River undone 3-2 as Eagle, Pirate twirlers combine for 27 strikeouts
Reagan Kane
ROCKY RIVER, Ohio (April 15, 2025) -- On Tuesday, Rocky River fell to North Olmsted in a frozen eight-inning cliffhanger at Northview & 90. The Pirates registered a clutch rally in the bottom of the seventh to knot the Cleveland West Conference battle at 2-2 but were eventually undone 3-2 in the eighth.

Over the first three innings, Rocky River (4-3, 0-2 CWC) was set down 1-through-9 by Eagles pitcher Elena Scott. Reagan Kane nearly matched Scott: she filed eight strikeouts against the first 11 batters she faced, and the contest went into the fourth frame 0-0.

In the fourth, North Olmsted (3-7, 3-1) cobbled together a pair of plate crossings on a walk, a single, a ground-out, and a wild pitch. The Pirates answered with a half-measure in the fifth, and with both circle particulars hoisting Ks the 2-1 score rolled until the final half inning.

In that bottom of the seventh, the Maroon & White had their chances to leapfrog the visitors and earn a walk-off win. But the Pirates turned four singles and a North Olmsted error into just one run. The game went into the eighth.

Still pitching for River, Kane did well to escape the eighth allowing just one after the Eagles had logged a double-walk-single combo to start the inning. She finished the contest with 15 strikeouts in eight innings of work, allowing three runs on five hits and five walks. She had three wild pitches.

Rocky River did get a runner aboard in the fading-light bottom of the inning, but any rally was quelled by a game-ending double play. Scott went the route for the Eagles, scattering seven singles while walking two. Her two runs allowed were unearned, and she fanned 12.

Carly Ewing and Kane each had two hits.

With Tuesday's setback, River has lost three in a row.
