ROCKY RIVER, Ohio (Sept. 24, 2024) -- The Pirates came through in a taut first set and then coasted to a victory over Buckeye in Tuesday night Cleveland West Conference action. Rocky River swept Buckeye 25-21, 25-16, 25-17 to earn a two-match season sweep of the Bucks and notch their third straight victory overall.
Rocky River (7-2, 7-2 CWC) overcame a dodgy serving night by hitting a season-high .300 on the attack. Seniors Ella Brokaw (14 kills) and Sophia Goldberg (10K) paced the Pirate attack up front. Brokaw, Goldberg, Ella Duffy, Avery LaPorte, and Julia Leslie were honored in a pre-match ceremony. All five seniors would contribute to the triumph on River hardwood.
Kylie Spies added 23 assists and three aces. As a team, the Buccaneers struggled in service, piling up a season-high 4 errors per set (12 total). Grace Richmond chipped in with 5K and a block. Maeve Sheridan filed 6K; Lilly Cupp had a team-high 10 digs.
The win came over a solid Buckeye squad which is still over-.500 in conference play. Rocky River's earlier win against the Bucks (6-5, 5-4) was a 3-1 contest in Medina on Aug. 29. Sydney Swank led Buckeye with 7K.
Seniors saluted and win streak extended, the Pirates will now continue with a busy week. The Maroon & White will play a CWC road match at Normandy Thursday and then a non-league road tilt at Brecksville Saturday.
