On Jan. 12, Rocky River returned from a holiday respite with a Great Lakes Conference double dual hosted by Fairview High School. The Pirates went 0-2, dropping a 42-24 decision to Bay and a 52-24 match to the host Warriors. Connor Schiefferle went 2-0 at 150. Schiefferle clocked a major decision and a suddent-death overtime minor. Ilyas Bouchenafa, Aiden Konet, and Laith Qasem also escaped without a loss. Each went 1-0 in bouts that made it to the mat. Qasem earned a pin in his heavyweight conquest against Fairview.

On Jan. 19, the Matmen in Maroon competed in a double dual at North Olmsted High School. The Pirates eeked out a 36-30 win over the host Eagles and dealt the Valley Forge Patriots a 48-30 loss. Konet, Nathan Maloney, and Schiefferle all registered two wins by fall in the GLC sweep.

The following day (Jan. 20), River competed in a special Duel in the School Friday matinee match at Lutheran West. The Wrestling Raiders were edged 36-33 in that one. Dylan Heffron, Schiefferle, and Konet logged pins in the non-conference affair against the Pirates' neighbors to the south.

With his 5-0 mark in January, senior Aiden Konet has upped his season record to 11-2.

ON THE HORIZON: Rocky River will host a double dual (Elyria Catholic, Westlake) Jan. 26. The event will mark Senior Night for the Sons of Blackbeard. Pirate Greybeards to be recognized are Ali Karar, Aiden Konet, Nathan Maloney, Owen Patton, and Rees Vaughan. ... The Pirates are then scheduled to compete in a GLC crossover dual -- on the road -- Feb. 2.
