ROCKY RIVER, Ohio – Rocky River High School seniors Flint Slankard and Zoe Satayathum both had artwork that made it to the final round of the 55th Annual Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition. The program is dedicated to the educational and artistic advancement of our talented young people in the state of Ohio.
Slankard had two paintings selected for the final round, while Satayathum had one painting chosen. They were three of the 259 works that advanced to the final round and will be displayed at the exhibition from April 21 through May 15 at the James A. Rhodes State Office Tower in Columbus.
Slankard’s pieces are titled Baking Cookies and Midnight Snack, while Satayathum’s painting is titled Stickers.
Open to all Ohio high schools, the exhibition provides budding young artists throughout the state with opportunities to advance their talent through scholarships or simply experiencing the process of entering their work in a competition. The exhibition encourages an appreciation for the arts throughout Ohio and reflects the fine quality of art instruction and talent which exist throughout the state.
The process of selecting artworks for the State Exhibition begins on a regional level. Each of the 15 regions throughout the state has a designated Regional Director responsible for choosing the jurors for their region and for arranging specifics of the event. The jurors for the state level of competition are chosen from all over the country and are generally professional artists, college level instructors, or both.
This year, there were a total of 6,756 art entries submitted by approximately 2,500 Ohio high school students. Selections from each of the 14 regions were made by a panel of judges chosen by regional directors. State jurors then selected 259 pieces for the exhibition with 25 of the 259 chosen to receive the Governor's Award of Excellence.
An awards ceremony will also be held on May 4.
