Pirates fall in West test against Demons

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio -- Rocky River lost to Westlake, 3-1, in Great Lakes Conference West Division action on Thursday evening at Rocky River Gymnasium.

The Demons prevailed, 18-25, 25-17, 25-20, 25-17, to saddle the Pirates with a sixth straight loss in the west-side neighborhood series.

Rocky River (5-2, 2-2 GLC West) hit .167 and was charged with a season-high 8.0 dig errors per set. The Detroit Road Buccaneers were paced by Samantha Young, who clocked 25 kills and a .411 attack percentage.

"This was a great match," said head coach Brittany Morris. "The girls fought hard. Now, we need to come back in practice tomorrow and work just as hard."

Box-score notables included Paige Waite (11 kills, .333 average, two service aces, 2-1/2 blocks), Estella Giomini (37 assists), and Maggie Pfahl (16 digs).

With her 25 swats on Thursday, Samantha Young has 50 kills over the Double-R's last two matches. Young averaged 3.1 kills per set in 2020. She went into Thursday's match averaging 4.8 kills per set this season.

The Demons have now taken six straight from the Pirates since River's last series win in 2015.
