Pirates prevail in (three) Patriot games

PARMA HEIGHTS, Ohio – Rocky River defeated Valley Forge, 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-14), in Great Lakes Conference action on Thursday evening.

Hitter Paige Waite led the River effort with a big night. Waite carded 15 kills against just three hitting errors in 21 attempts. After hitting over .350 from Sept. 5-17, the sophomore swatter posted a .571 mark on Thursday. Waite also had four blocks (one solo, three assists) on the evening

The Pirates (9-3, 9-1 GLC) have now won six straight matches; all have been GLC affairs. The Maroon & White pulled off a season sweep of the Patriots with Thursday’s road win; Rocky River also swept Valley Forge in straight sets on Aug. 24. The Pirates have now won five matches in three-game sweeps.

Contributing in across-the-board fashion to Thursday’s rout was Austoria Miller. The junior collected five kills, two aces, two blocks and 11 digs. Miller’s two blocks marked a season-best.

Taylor Spies fed Waite, Miller, Emily Stanciu (nine kills), and Madie Shoaf (five) to the tune of a 13-assist night. Spies protected the backcourt with 11 digs.

Amanda Franz added 13 digs

As a team, Rocky River hit .237.


 

CANNON FIRE … 

WAITE – JUST A MINUTE: Sophomore Paige Waite had 15 kills in three sets at Valley Forge. Her 5.0 kills per set mark a new career-best. The younger sister of 2019 RRHS  graduate and Pirate Volleyball standout Rachael Waite has 126 kills in 2019 and 219 for her career.

DIG THIS: Senior Amanda Franz logged her 200th dig of the season on Thursday. Franz leads the team in the defensive stat category, working her way to over 4.0 per set. The three-year letterman is approaching 500 digs for her career; she finished Thursday’s action with 472.
