Maroon momentum: Pirates sail into circuit tourney off big win

Mac Milenius

FAIRVIEW PARK, Ohio -- The Rocky Pirates Boys' Golf team is on a roll. The Pirates won their 15th Great Lakes Conference match of the season on Tuesday, and the victory dished out a measure of retribution.

The Swinging Corsairs went into Tuesday's action -- on the eve of the 5th annual GLC Championship Tournament -- with a 14-1 conference record. The one loss came to Elyria Catholic Panthers in the GLC Preview Tournament on Aug. 12.

On Tuesday, Rocky River dispatched the Panthers, 157-179, in a home match at Big Met Golf Course. 2018 GLC Player of the Year Mac Milenius carded a season-best 37 to lead the Pirates in the key win on their home turf. Milenius birdied the par-4 second and nearly chipped in for birdie on the ninth. The senior was joined on the four-man score sheet by Will Bennett, Carlo Fricano and Ethan Mylett, all of who fired 4-over 36s on what was a beautufil day for golf in the Rocky River valley.

The Pirates (17-3, 15-1 GLC) now head into Wendesday's title event with a slim lead over the Panthers (13-2-1 GLC) at the top of the conference standings. The GLC Tournament will be held at Grey Hawk Golf Club in Lagrange, Ohio.

Elyria Catholic defeated River by five strokes (335 to 340) in the Aug. 12 GLC Preview Tournament.

Rocky River is the four-time defending Great Lakes Conference champion. The Pirates went 18-0 in circuit play in 2017; they went 12-0 over a dozen league tilts in 2018. The Maroon & White tote an all-time GLC mark of 80-2 (.976) into Wednesday's GLC Tournament.

"Hopefully, this momentum carries into tomorrow, and we can clinch a conference title," said Head Coach David Hendrickson.
