Rapid & Resolute: Double-R soph hangs impressive time at state meet

RR Girls' Cross Country

HEBRON, Ohio – Samantha Coleman, a sophomore standout for Rocky River Girls’ Cross Country, earned her way back to the DI Ohio Championships for a second straight year, and then Coleman came through in flying Maroon & White colors on Saturday, earning 36th place in the Buckeye State meet. Posting a personal-best time of 18:59.7, Coleman placed 36th in a field of 184 runners. Coleman opened with a 5:49-mile which had her just inside the top-50. She would pass three foes by the 4,200-meter split and then five more in the final 800 meters to earn the 36-slot.

The athletic two-time Great Lakes Conference MVP also passed another runner in impressive fashion – the 2018 version of herself. Coleman’s time Saturday shaved more than 80 seconds off her 93rd-place performance on the same 5k state course at National Trail Raceway.

The individual champion in Saturday’s DI race was Beavercreek senior Taylor Ewert, who led wire-to-wire before crossing the wire in 17 minutes-and-22 seconds. Ewert was the lead edge of a fine 51-point Beavercreek team score, as the Beavers would win the team title in Hebron.

The event marked the 42nd annual state competition in girls’ cross country. Coleman qualified for the event by placing 16th in the Boardman DI Regional Cross Country Championships on Oct. 26.
