Raider mat-men to be missed

Mahdi Salti (L) and Matt Williams

NORWALK, Ohio – The Wrestling Raiders closed out their season by competing on district tournament mats over the weekend. [results]

Seniors Matt Williams and Mahdi Salti took to the DII Norwalk District Tournament mats at Norwalk High School, both as three-time district qualifiers for the Maroon & White. Williams went 1-2 with a win by fall at 113 pounds. One of his losses was against sophomore Trevor Hisey (St. Marys Memorial), the eventual runner-up at 113.

Salti went 0-2 at 195, which included a losing bout against the eventual third-place finisher in the weight class, senior Terion Stewart of Sandusky High School. Two other Pirates – Ryan Maloney and Ergi Sulce – qualified as alternates for the tournament, which included athletes from 45 schools.

The top four finishers from each bracket are now headed to the DII Ohio Championships to be held at the Jerome Schottenstein Center at Ohio State University on March 13-15.

Williams – who at 32-13, led the Pirates in victories this season – and Salti (18-13) closed out well-decorated Rocky River careers in the weekend’s competition. In addition to being three-time district qualifiers, both were also three-time silver medalists in Great Lakes Conference action.

They go down the continuum – from lettermen to medalists to qualifiers – all the way to what they will be next winter.

Missed.
