Pirates split in Wednesday action at Lakewood

LAKEWOOD, Ohio -- Rocky River's Track & Field squads earned a split in Wednesday evening Great Lakes Conference action at Lakewood High School. The Lakewood Rangers edged the River boys, 69.5-67.5, while the Pirate girls earned a 91.5-46.5 victory.

On the boys' side, Rocky River (1-1, 1-1 GLC) got big efforts from sophomore Luke Dorenkott (won the 400-meter run, part of winning 4x800 relay squad), freshman Nic DiSalvo (first place in 100-meter dash, first in high jump, member of winning 4x100), junior Edward Opris (runner-up in 100, third in 200, member of winning 4x100), freshman Grant Preto (second in long jump, third in 400, part of winning 4x800), senior Set Williams (first in 3,200, part of winning 4x800), sophomore Greg Ganor (runner-up in 800, 1,600), and freshman Jason Dubbs (second in shot, third in discus).

Rocky River swept gold, silver, and bronze in the 1,600-meter run and discus. Senior Luke Kishna (first in 1,600) and junior Adam Maroon (first in discus) served as lead edge of the sword in those 1-2-3 sweeps.

In the girls' competition, the Pirates (2-0, 2-0) got solid performances from senior Sarah Mazzei (career-best 12.7 seconds in the 100, win in the 200), junior Sam Coleman (career-best 2:25.5 in the 800), freshman Doris Kale (first place in shot), and senior Kiera Vesy (victory in the 400 and member of two winning relays).

The Pirates are slated to return to Rangers Stadium on Friday for the 40th Annual Kiwanis Ranger Relays.
