RRHS Students Participate in Hour of Code/STEAM Activities
RRHS students participate in Hour of Code & STEAM activities.
High School students had the opportunity to participate in Hour of Code and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math) activities Oct. 11 to raise awareness and make connections to the fields and careers.

The concept for the event arose out of past participation in the National Hour of Code day in December – a one-hour introduction to computer science to demystify code and show that anyone can learn the basics and participate in the field. Through discussion and feedback from staff and students, high school administrators began to discuss how to make the day applicable to more subjects and attract the interests of all students.

“The goal of the event is to have students participate in experiences that will raise awareness and make connections to the STEAM fields and careers that exist based on their individual interests,” said RRHS Assistant Principal Brian Gergely.

Freshmen participated in an hour of coding that directly aligns with the national December event.

Sophomores and juniors listened to Joel Kearns, deputy director of Space Flight Systems at NASA Glenn Research Center. Kearns spoke with students about the type of work done at NASA Glenn, compared to other NASA facilities around the country; what life would be like in outer space; and the logistics and obstacles involved in a mission designed to land humans on Mars.

They also participated in a STEAM expo with representatives from the University of Akron; Baldwin Wallace University; Cleveland State University; Bettcher Industries, a developer and manufacturer of cutting tools used in food processing operations and industrial applications; COMSAT Architects, a technology company providing services in the creation of future space communication systems and network architectures; Hyland Software Inc.; and KeyBank.

The RRHS Computer Science Department gave presentations at the STEAM expo on virtual reality, Ozobots and Spheros. There also were a variety of visual, hands-on and interactive demonstrations by the RRHS Science, Art, Math and Career Shadowing departments.
