Tips for Learning Math
Standards for Mathematical Practices
In Rocky River math classes grades K-12, our teachers seek to develop a variety of math expertise in our students surrounding 8 Standards for Mathematical Practice. We share this communication with you so that you not only develop an understanding yourself of these mathematical practices, but also to encourage your support of the importance of mathematical struggle.  The struggle is real!
  1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them
  2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively
  3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others
  4. Model with mathematics
  5. Use appropriate tools strategically
  6. Attend to precision
  7. Look for and make use of structure
  8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

How can parents help?
Allow for the struggle.... By providing the student an opportunity to solve the problem independently...
  • it creates an authentic experience that promotes critical thinking based on logic and content mastery
  • through a series of trial and error, with feedback and critique, it will engage the student in the meaningful process of succeeding through struggle
  • it enhances conditions that promote a "beneficial struggle"
  • it focuses learners on the details of what they are doing
  • it gives the students a chance to compare and contrast good and bad solutions
  • it challenges students to find a viable solutions, but not to the point of complete frustration
  • parents can encourage and guide to promote critical thinking and mathematical success

So what does this mean for parents? Allowing your child to experience the struggle is beneficial, promotes a mathematical understanding and sets the path for success. ? Some resources we use on a daily basis:
