Destination Imagination Teams Qualify for State Competition
Two Rocky River Middle School teams qualified to compete at the Destination Imagination state competition after placing at the Region 16 Tournament.
Teams Techno Bunnies and Magna Virtue placed first in their challenges and will move on to state competition in Mount Vernon on March 24. Teams that earn top spots at the state level will have the opportunity to compete at Globals in May in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Team Magna Virtua won first place in the Unlikely Attraction (scientific) challenge by exploring three scientific principles while designing and building an amusement park attraction. Team members Beatrix Stickney, fifth grade, and Hugo Stickney, seventh grade, earned the Renaissance Award for demonstrating extraordinary amounts of effort and preparation in their solutions and outstanding skills in engineering, design and performance.
Team Techno Bunnies won first place in the Inside Impact (service learning) challenge for presenting their service project to provide shower supplies for the homeless. Team members Dasara Beta and Sophia Mural, eighth grade, and Anna Rouphail, seventh grade, earned the Torchebearer Award for solutions that have extraordinary impact in and beyond their local communities.
Two other teams from RRMS and Kensington Elementary School also earned awards in the regional tournament.
RRMS team Despicito Imaginito placed third in the Treasure! (Improvisational) challenge, in which they had to research different cultures and famous explorers, create and present an improvisational skit about a question to return a lost cultural treasure to its owner, integrate two explorers and a prop into the quest, and show to characters work together to overcome setback. Team members were seventh graders Adam Beach, Darren Gerrity and Gabe Harmath.
At Kensington, team Rocky River Alien Fish placed third in the Drop Zone (engineering challenge. They had to design, build and test a freestanding structure that could withstand impacts from dropped weights. They also had to create a story about a sudden event with dramatic effect. Team members were fourth graders Evan Zavagno, Noah Madsen, Ryland Neeper and Chiara Kimmel, and third grader Cody Kimmel.
Team Frenando’s Flying Narwhals participated in the Treasure! Challenge. Team members were sixth graders Luke Naymik and Nathan Naymik, and fifth graders Tom Malquest, Evan Baisch and Gigi Moeller.
