Rocky River High School junior Sophie Hudson is the recipient of two state awards for outstanding student achievement.
Megan Wagner-Harden, Rocky River High School Intervention Specialist and one of Sophie’s teachers, nominated Sophie for the Annual Outstanding Student Achievement Award, sponsored by the State Support Team Region 3 and the Educational Service Center of Cuyahoga County. She will be recognized for that nomination on May 15th at a special awards breakfast.
All students nominated from State Support Region 3 were automatically considered for the R. A. Horn Outstanding Student Achievement Award, sponsored by the Ohio Coalition for the Education of Children with Disabilities. Sophie is one of only 16 students in Ohio to receive the R. A. Horn, presented to one “exemplary special education student from each of Ohio’s sixteen State Support Teams.”
Sophie, who has an autoimmune disease that effects her eyesight, “was recently sworn in to National Honor Society and maintains a high GPA and an excellent reputation, despite the fact that she sometimes misses school” due to her challenges, says Ms. Wagner-Harden. “Sophie always comes in early to work on learning Braille so she doesn’t miss out on her academic time.” Indeed, Ms. Wagner-Harden continues, Sophie will be taking college-level English next year.
Sophie, who is the daughter of Jen and Mike Sheridan, laughs that it’s sometimes hard to get up early and come to school, especially on late-start days when her friends and classmates are still in bed. “If I didn’t, though, there’s just not enough time to fit it all in,” she says. Looking ahead to college, Sophie hopes to go into the medical or special education field: “something with children,” she explains.
Sophie, her parents, and a representative of her choice from the Rocky River schools will travel to Columbus on June 17th for a luncheon to honor her receipt of the R.A. Horn Award.
