RRCSD Snow Days

Thanks to Northeast Ohio’s history of long, cold, snowy winters, each year we receive a number of questions regarding closing school for weather related reasons. The following provides some of the guidelines used by the district when deciding if school should be closed due to weather:

  • The decision to close school is always made with student safety as our first priority.
  • Every attempt is made to make a decision regarding canceling school by 6:00 AM and to get that information to local television and radio stations as soon as possible.
  • Road conditions, sidewalk access, weather forecasts for the rest of the day and the temperature/wind chills are all taken into consideration.
  • If the schools are closed, all programs and activities for that day, including sporting events and practices, are cancelled.
  • The rules for school calendars and calamity days (snow days) have changed with the start of the 2014-2015 school year. The school calendar and calamity days are now based on minimum hours instead of instructional days (see below). If the Rocky River City School District does not meet the required minimum hours, make-up time will start the first day of summer recess.
  • If the schools do not close, the ultimate decision regarding whether it is safe for students to travel to school rests with parents. If weather conditions, in your judgment, do not permit your child to travel safely to school, please call your child’s school and the absence will be excused.

We understand that closing our schools has an impact on family schedules, athletic and co-curricular activities and the educational process, so we try very hard not to disrupt the school year while also focusing on student safety.

If you have additional questions about weather related school closings, please contact the Superintendent’s office at 440/356-6715.
