6th GRADE NEWEST NOTES (Beyond 2016): Scientific Method

Chapter 1 Vocabulary: SCIENTIFIC METHOD AND MEASUREMENT

SCIENTIFIC METHOD VOCABULARY

Page 6 Science- The systematic study of natural events and conditions. Subjects can be in the living or non-living world

Page 7 Empirical evidence – Evidence that includes observations and measurements. It includes all the data that people gather to test to support and evaluate scientific explanations.

Page 28 Experiment – An organized procedure to study something under controlled conditions

Page 28 Observation – The process of getting information by using the senses.

Page 28 Hypothesis – An idea or explanation that can be tested, and that leads to a scientific investigation

Page 29 Variable – A factor that can change in a scientific investigation

Page 29 Independent Variable – The factor that is deliberately (intentionally) changed by the person running the experiment

Page 29 Dependent Variable – This factor changes as a RESULT OF THE independent variable

Page 29 Data – The information and measurements gathered by experimentation. These will later be used to present in the conclusion.

Page 34 Controlled variable (also known as CONTROL)- This is part of the experiment that is identical to the experimental group except that the independent variable is not manipulated (changed) by the person running the experiment

***Other important terms to know for SCIENTIFIC METHOD

Control Group – The group in an experiment that does not receive treatment by the person running the experiment, and is used as a benchmark to measure how the other tested subjects do

Problem – A question proposed for solution or discussion to be solved by experimentation

Conclusion – The summary of your experiment supported by your data

Procedures – The steps used to complete the experiment

Inference – An idea or conclusion that's drawn from evidence and reasoning. What may APPEAR to be true

Levels – The location, size, or scale of a scientific investigation
