National Merit Scholars

Five Rocky River High School seniors were named 2017 National Merit Semifinalists.

Angeliki Citron, Megan Fox, Catherine Hauck, Riley Robinette and Jamie Spallino are among the 16,000 students from 22,000 high schools across the country who took the PSAT in their junior year and earned scores high enough to qualify as Semifinalists. These students will move on to compete for about 8,300 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $34 million.

Less than 1 percent of high school seniors make it to the semifinal round. About 15,000 students are expected to move on to become National Merit Finalists, which should be announced in February.

Dante Centuori, Elizabeth Demers, James Fitzgibbon, Oleg Golev, Elizabeth Kysela, Katherine Malquest and Josiah Sawyer are among the about 34,000 students nationwide to be recognized as National Merit Commended students in recognition of their outstanding academic promise. Commended students can become candidates for Special Scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses.
